1795 Antique enamel gold brooch "Je Bless et Je Gueris"
"Je Bless et Je Gueris" (I wound and I heal) is written on cupid's shield, there are two kissing doves, and at cupid's feet is his quiver of arrows. Surrounding this portrait enamel scene is a basse-taille enamel which is done to emulate small pearls. Framing this most charming scene is vibrant cobalt blue guilloche enamel. Many enamel brooches of the period commemorated lost love through death and thus a memorial piece. This brooch is special because it celebrates love and defines, in a wonderfully sentimental way, the function of cupid in the act of love. On the verso it bears a 22, the maker's initials, GM, and the mark of a vessel.
