18k Gold Necklace with Intaglio Seals and Ancient Coins, circa 1970
18K vintage necklace with 7 18K gold bezeled drops of antique and ancient intaglios and ancient Roman coins. Beginning on the left, the ancient coin is difficult to ascertain the exact motif, following is a rock crystal carving of Leda and the Swan, (Leda braces herself against the thrusts of the swan transformed from Zeus). Next is a natural bright purple amethyst carving of the winged Cupid subduing a ferocious lion embodies the notion that love conquers all, following, in the center, is an ancient Roman coin with fine definition, then we have a natural red corundum intaglio, most likely ancient, (this carving is rare because corundum is a very hard stone making very difficult to carve artfully). This scene depicts Hercules capturing or taking the Cretan Bull. Next is a natural green tourmaline intaglio of a full frontal nude Roman soldier in battle. Finally, an oval natural bright purple amethyst intaglio of Faun (Roman mythology symbols of peace and fertility) fighting a goat.
This unusual necklace is easy to wear from daytime into evening. It is in 16 inches in length. Overall this necklace is in fine condition, there is much wear on one of the ancient coins, as mentioned above. The weight is 165.59 grams.
