Antique old cut diamond and multi color enamel stickpin, c. 1875.
Antique old cut diamond and multi color enamel stickpin, c. 1875. Approximately 26 rose and old cut diamonds are set in silver. The head of the pheasant is blue, yellow, red and green enamel and 18K. The continental silver, approximately 800, is backed with the approximately 18K yellow gold. The pin of the stickpin is approximately 14K, no doubt used for the strength of 14K over 18K. This pin is totally 2 9/16th inches in length and the pheasant is very nearly 1 1/8th inches in length. The piece bears no marks, but has been tested to confirm its gold and silver content.
Stickpins were worn vertically by gentlemen in their ties or lapel. The top or head of the stickpin should only be visible. One would usually wear a stickpin clutch at the bottom to hold the piece in place.
