22K Jeweled Cross brooch/pendant centering an ancient Byzantine Coin of Christ
22K gold Maltese cross gem set with four fine natural vivid red rubies, eight bright green emeralds and four purple amethysts. In the center is a Tetarteron Nomisma, a gold coin of Christ Pantocrator - Christ the Almighty and presented as the highest authority. This ancient coin is in fine condition, with unusual high relief, and small amount of wear. It has been examined by the ANA. See the photograph of this Certificate of Authenticity. The ancient coin is probably 22 to 24K gold. The pendant weights 25.9 grams. The 22K Maltese cross was made by the contemporary jeweler Carolyn Tyler. She has skillfully set, around this rare ancient coin, rubies, possibly to signify the blood of Christ, emeralds with resurrection, and amethyst for spirituality and wisdom
The repousse gold work is well executed with a curvilinear motif giving the piece an almost Art Nouveau feel.
The pin/pendant is 1.75 inches high and 1.75 inches across. On the verso is the signature of Carolyn Tyler, 1998. Carolyn Tyler is known for her fine hand fabricated jewelry with distinctive designs. The piece is also marked 22K and bears Carolyn Tyler hallmark and the piece is numbered.
This pin/pendant is suspended on an approximately 22K gold heavy braided chain that is 21 inches in length. These two pieces go together well but were probably put together at a later date.
The heavy gold chain is listed separately under chain necklaces, and the brooch is listed separately under brooches.
The chain weighs 96 grams, it is approximately 4.6 mm. in width.
