Antique emerald and diamond salamander brooch, c. 1865. This salamander, brimming with personality, is silver topped 18K gold. The pinstem bears the head of the eagle for 18K, and initials in a lozenge shaped mark. The natural Colombian emeralds are a vibrant green color, they are surrounded by rose cut diamonds. The eye's of the salamander are cabochon cut rubies, the silver has been hand etched to simulate a salamander's skin.
The salamander, symbolizes passion, immortality, and rebirth. Interestingly, as early as the 16th century the salamander represented a lover's burning desire. Today, it can be all those as well as a cute passenger on your attire.
