Antique Diamond Large Wasp Brooch French, c. 1840
Antique diamond wasp brooch, c. 1840, French. We have over the years had the good fortune to acquire many lovely insect brooches. They are after all an important genre unto themselves. None, however, exceed in quality or uniqueness than the instant example. The early mine cut diamonds are all bright and white (which is unusual for this time period). We estimate the diamonds to be near colorless (I/J), and slightly included to very slightly included with a total diamond weight of 4.5 cts.
This wasp possesses a pearl measuring 7.22 mm. We feel this is the original pearl and that the pearl is probably a natural saltwater pearl, but we have not tested the pearl with an outside laboratory. The eye's of this charming insect are round natural cabochon rubies which display a bright color giving our insect a perky and amusing countenance.
You will see from the photographs that the pinstem and front legs can be removed. At this time period, woman wore their brooches in different places - on their clothing, on hats, on the sleeve of a gown, as a pendant, and in the hair. They needed the ability to change the fittings to accommodate this versatility.
This piece is silver (at least 800 pure), topped 18K (.750) gold. It bears French hallmarks for 18K (the head of the eagle), weighs 19.8 grams and is slightly less than 2 inches in length and 1.5 inches wide across the wings.
All items sold are accompanied by a detailed statement of value as well as all original GIA certificates, if specified in listing. As always, we guarantee all of pieces. Each piece of jewelry arrives in a finely gift-wrapped presentation box.
