Large Wrist Bangle and/or Upper Arm Bangle in Ebony & Diamonds, c 1895.
Antique Bangle and/or upper arm bangle of ebony with diamonds bezel set. Describing a perfect circle and having an internal diameter of 2-5/16th inches, this very unusual piece in fine condition has a width of 3/8th of an inch. The ebony is studded ever 7/8th of an inch with an approximately 0.06 ct. european cut diamond set in platinum (with an underneath of 18K yellow gold). These metals have been acid tested. For those that desire a large size bangle, this antique piece represents a fine and unusual statement for the wrist.
Bangles worn on the upper arm are referred to as an "armlet". Our piece is a slip-on bangle that fits the upper arm, and is a sleek -even exotic- statement in natural ebony measuring around 10-7/8th inches. This solid black ebony is punctuated with 12 diamonds in all. The estimated weight of these stones is 0.75 cts., they are all estimated to be near colorless (H-I) and very slightly included to slightly included. The bangle weighs 20.5 grams or approximately 2/3rds of an ounce.
Upper arm bangles were first seen in the art of the Ancient Assyrians, and later in the art of the Persians, 6th to 4th Century B.C. These depictions always involved men wearing wide and jewel encrusted statements. More recently, this neoclassical style was popular throughout the 19th century (see photograph), of and worn by women in decorative and color contrasting statements like their ancient predecessors. Today they have been seen in modelling shows by such fashion houses as Fendi and Prada.
Please note our model is a medium to large size.
