In 1949 Pablo Picasso worked on a very important commission for the World Congress of Parisians for Peace. One of the important symbols for his work at that time was the Dove of Peace. And when Picasso's wife Francoise Gilot happened to give birth to a girl in that year the baby was named Paloma (Dove).
Paloma Picasso come by her artistry quite rightly then and by the time she was in her early 30's she was hired by Tiffany's as one of their in-house designers.
One of her most successful works involved the 'kiss' earrings which were done both in sterling and gold. There were two aspects of the kiss design which we believe account for this piece's success. First they convey an informality and spontaneity. Second they are a strong design as was explained by Paloma because as she said, 'women were strong'. Both of these sentiments found great favor in the taste of women at that time.
