Art Deco Diamond & Colored Stone Clips/hair barrettes, one by Cartier, c. 1920.
ON HOLD Cartier Art Deco diamond and unheated Burma sapphire platinum brooch/hair barrette offered with an architecturally identical, but very slightly larger ruby brooch: 1/16th inch longer, and 1/8th inch wider. The very slightly smaller Cartier sapphire brooch measures 1- 7/8th in length, and one half of an inch in width. The diamond and unheated Burma Ruby brooch is 5/8th of an inch in width, and 1-15/16th of an inch in length. The sapphire brooch has a weight of 11.9 grams, and the ruby brooch has a weight of 19.2 grams.
The quality of the materials in these matching brooches/hair barrettes is nothing short of superlative, the craftsmanship is supremely high and the form and proportions are the same. Arguably they could have been made by different hands, but they are well matched in the extreme.
The pieces can be worn with equal facility in the hair or in fabric.
The Cartier Art Deco Diamond and Sapphire Platinum Antique Double Clip Brooch and Hair Barrette is signed and numbered by Cartier, this Art Deco jewel is nothing short of magnificent. The natural unheated sapphires (almost assuredly from Burma), are a bright vivid blue, they are estimated to weigh 4.5 cts. The diamonds are all well matched, estimated to be F in color (colorless), and very, very slightly included (VVS) in clarity. They are estimated to weigh .98 cts.
The ruby and diamond clip possess very fine and unusual fancy cut diamonds, (which in the trade are called French cut) and vividly red unheated Burma rubies The rubies are estimated weight is 3.74 cts. The diamonds are colorless to near colorless (F/G), and very very slightly included to very slightly included (VVS-VS). The estimated diamond weight is 9.5 cts.
These two objects are wonderful examples from the Art Deco time period. It is rare to encounter one authentic Art Deco brooch/hair barrette with such fine stones and workmanship, but to find this ensemble is a rarity.
