Antique Castillani Pendant/Brooch with Matching Earrings.
Antique Castillani pendant/brooch with matching earrings. This is Etruscan Revival at its very best by one of the foremost in archaeological revival jewels. The 19th century was characterized by a renewed interest in ancient and classical art. It was most popular by all to visit Europe on "The Grand Tour". Because of the early 19th century discovery of ancient Etruscan tombs, Rome was especially a favor destination. Fortunato Pio Castellani, a leading Italian jeweler, responded to this trend by producing what he termed as ‘Italian archaeological jewellery’.
We are pleased to offer this wonderful suite by the famous nineteenth century jewelry House of Castillani. Fortunate Pio Castellani and his sons mastered the ancient gold techniques such as filigree work and granulation, ensuring that the firm was one of the most popular jewelers in the 19th century, supplying both royalty and the aristocracy. The brooch is signed on the verso by 2 interlocking C's. One can see the care taken to the fine Etruscan bead and wire work surrounding the three dimensional Lion's head. The brooch/pendant is 2.75 inches in length (including the bale), and the earrings is 2.25 inches long. Overall this set is in fine condition, however, please note that one small bead is missing from the brooch.
