Fifteen years before the American Civil Ware and the Lincoln presidency, England's best jewelers were using highly polished gold under almandine garnets (called carbuncles) with diamonds to produce what today is an absolute treasure in terms of mid-19th century antique jewels, here is a masterpiece that has survived in perfect condition. Notice that the diamonds are set in silver. Useable platinum did not yet exist.
